Sandpoint was officially incorporated in 1901. Timber harvesting drove the economy for nearly a century after as lumberjacks moved in from the overharvested Great Lakes region. The economy was given a boost during World War II from Faragut Naval Station, a training center for the US Navy located at the southern end of Lake Pend Oreille.
The opening of Schweitzer Mountain Resort in 1963 turned the area into a tourism destination based on its natural beauty. Snow skiing in Sandpoint revolves about Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort atop 6,400-foot Schweitzer Mountain. With several hundred inches of snowfall each winter season Schweitzer draws snow skiing enthusiasts to its slopes throughout the Northwest.
In and around Sandpoint there are numerous places to get away from it all for a nice equestrian adventure. If you have your own horses you can find any number of trails to ride on. There are numerous trails in the Trestle Creek, Gold Creek, Trout Creek and Rapid Lightening Creek drainages.
Sandpoint bicycle riders have a lot of options thanks to the efforts of community groups like North Idaho Bikeways. In 1998, the non-profit group opened the Carlson-McConnaughey Sagle Community Trail, which connects the Long Bridge path to a new path leading to Sagle Road. Since then, they have opened other bike paths to safely connect communities.
